All the World’s Protests

All the World's Protests is a complex video and sound installation by Nigerian artist Ayọ̀ Akínwándé, created especially for the Pulverturm. Video footage of countless demonstrations that appeared in international news coverage in 2019, the "Year of Protests," runs on 40 monitors. On 12 audio tracks, a composition made from the original sounds of the protests is audible, along with improvised musical jam sessions as an artistic response. The work is part of the long-term project Archiving the Future, which, based on the political situation in Nigeria, deals with body and voice in public space and the relationship between the "powerful" and the "powerless." Akínwándé also refers to the installation which was created in the isolation of the pandemic lockdowns as the Situation Room, where we watch the world come apart at the seams from behind the meter-thick walls of the Pulverturm.

The artist, curator and writer Ayọ̀ Akínwándé (b. 1986) lives in Lagos, Nigeria. With an academic background in architecture, his practice includes photographic media, installation, sound, and performance. He was a recipient of the Grant for Media Art of the Foundation of Lower Saxony at the Edith-Russ-Haus 2020.
