Szabolcs KissPál: The Silicon Dance, 2001
IN AQUARIUM, EVERY NIGHT from sunset till midnight, view from Peterstraße


The work is based on raw material from the Hungarian making-of documentary Így készült a Jadwiga párnája (How Jadviga's Pillow was made) from 2000 by Péter Gerõ. It shows how a dance scene with shot-counter-shot is produced in a historical feature film. The dance partners do not dance with each other, but with the cameraman and his technical team. Since they are holding strings in their hands, close-ups of their faces were obviously taken, which are later assembled into what appears to be a dance of the two.


In contemporary art, the technical images produced by digital tools either hide the technical apparatus of their making, thus emphasizing its effects and possibilities, or, on the contrary, reveal this apparatus through a pseudo-technophobic mimicry. How it is possible, then, for artworks created using digital technologies to not be accompanied by a statement on their high- or low-tech media usage? How is it possible to avoid a merely surface-deep politicization of an aesthetics that draws on easily accessible technological perfection? How can one address the issues of representation and power without drowning either in the purely illustrative trend of social sensitivity or in the journalistic approach of social and political questioning?


Szabolcs KissPál’s videos and installations, which are placed within ever changing and permanently intermediate spaces, offer answers to the above questions. In particular, a number of these questions and answers addressing contemporary art practice can be traced in his videoinstallation work The Silicon Valse – The Dance (2001). The work relies on a multilayered, mise en abyme structure (“film in a film”), where repetition is used as a method to fragment and destabilize the imagery, rather than as a tool of endless ordering or to systemize the perspective.


The mise en abyme structure is built through multiple acts of recording, from the initial cameraman, to the author of the making-of movie, and ultimately through the artist’s reframing of the act of representation. We see images that speak both about the images themselves and about what is to be found beyond them. Furthermore KissPal’s work destabilizes the interconnections between movement and stillness, knowledge and representation, by loosening the ties of the humanist notion of the space-time continuum.


The Silicon Valse
moves between intermediate spaces, rearranging the interconnection between technology, illusion, and representation.

The installation will debut at the Aquarium on 22 May 2021 at 9:30pm and will then run from sunset to midnight every day.
