Media Lab at the Edith Russ Site for Media Art

Oldenburg Medienkunsthaus and Waag Society www.waag.org cordially invite you to participate in a weekend of fun with new media. Digital film and photo cameras, laptops, scanners, and sound mixers – all this will be at your disposal to create your own images and sounds. You can also bring along material of your own. Animation Machine, Digital Storytelling, and ScratchWorx are the tools we'll use to »mix up« the material and turn it into a media work.

Week-long workshops and summer school for young and old will take place throughout the summer, and will come to a close in August when the works are presented as performances, VJ/DJ parties, films, animated sequences, and much more.

Animation Machine

Just like in a trick film, »stop-motion« animations are created here – brief film clips composed of single pictures. The Animation Machine is equipped with a computer stored in a cabinet, a camera, and a projector and is very easy to use. You can use objects you've brought along yourself, or you can make drawings and collages and put together a storyboard for an actual story. You place these on the console panel, push a big button, and presto! – you now have a picture. By pushing other buttons, you can then project the animated image onto the same console panel.

Digital Storytelling

Telling each other stories has a long tradition. Bedtime stories, legends, and fairy tales...there are stories in books, stories friends tell each other, stories you hear at school and at home, or from your grandparents, when they talk about the olden days. Digital Storytelling lets you put your stories online. Using iBook laptops, digital film and photo cameras, scanners, microphones, and sound mixers, you can create your own digital stories as little »online movies«.

ScratchWorx

The ScratchWorx console is an interactive »live performance« tool that you can use in groups of three – you »scratch« your digital material. You select individual elements from image and sound material you have produced beforehand or have brought with you, then play it into the iBook laptops and make it correspond with each another. These sequences that you select yourself will be mixed and manipulated »live« at a VJ/DJ party and shown on large projection screens.
