From the Margins to the Mainstream - Workshop Presentation
From the Margins to the Mainstream
New Investigations of Contemporary African Art in Western Metropolises from 1989 to 2011
Raphael Chikukwa, Curatorial Director of the National Gallery Harare (Zimbabwe)
Raphael Chikukwa analyzed exhibitions of contemporary African art in Western metropolises and reflected on them from an intercultural perspective.
Thematized is the visibility of "African images" with regard to their discursive structures and narrative figures in the European-African context. A critical reflection of current discourses in visual art and curatorial practice is central. The results of the workshop, which took place together with students at the University of Oldenburg, will be presented.
Raphael Chikukwa has curated numerous exhibitions as a freelance curator, primarily in Great Britain and Zimbabwe. He co-founded the first curatorial forum in Zimbabwe and was the curator for the Zimbabwe Pavilion at the 54th & 55th Venice Biennale in 2011/2013.
In cooperation with the European Master's Program in Migration and Intercultural Relations and the Specialized Master's Program of the Faculty of Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Oldenburg.
