Ari Folman: "Waltz with Bashir", Animationsfilm 2008
One night in a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 demonic dogs. Every night, always exactly 26 beasts. The two men conclude that there must be a connection to their deployment in the first Lebanon war. Ari is surprised, because he has lost all memory of that time. Distraught, he sets out to visit and question friends and comrades from that time. He must find out the truth about that time and about himself. The deeper Ari delves into his past, the clearer his thoughts become and the repressed experiences appear in surreal images...
Based on real interviews and events, WALTZ WITH BASHIR is the first feature-length animated documentary. Director, writer and producer Ari Folman has visualized the journey into his past - a journey into the youth culture of the 80s and West Beirut during the first Lebanon war - in a fantastic and gripping way. Since its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and further festival screenings, the Israeli-German-French co-production is considered probably the most extraordinary cinema event in 2008.
