Nevin Aladağ / Leopold Kessler: Repairing the City

Dual exhibition Nevin Aladağ and Leopold Kessler
07 May 2015, 19:00 - 16 August 2015, 18:00

From the 7th of may to the 16th of august, the Edith-Russ-Haus for media art will feature the dual exhibition of Nevin Aladağ and Leopold Kessler : "Repairing the City". In this exhibition questions of public and private space are negotiated. The artists work with performative media which intervene in the fabric of society, exposing visible and invisible limitations in our society.

The ironic title "Repairing the City" aims to describe the city as a fragile construct, the functions of which command constant surveillance, questioning and care to keep it from becoming the opposite of what a city should be: a community of citizens. This exhibition will feature not only a comprehensive overview of past works by Aladağ and Kessler in reference to public space, but will also stage new interventions in the cityspace of Oldenburg.

Nevin Aladağ plans to project her video installation "Voyeur" from one of the guest apparments of the Edith-Russ-Haus towards the streets below. Her sculptural installation "Rug" will bridge the front lawn of the Edith-Russ-Haus and the interior exhibition space with a gigantic carpet. In doing so, she opens the seemingly official, almost deterring architecture of the Edith-Russ-Haus with a poetic gesture of privacy towards the visitors.

Leopold Kessler will develop a new work for "Repairing  the City". His point of references are the perfectly built geodetic climbing frames on playgrounds, their architectures maximized for security. He will transform these temporarily into fragile and parasitic constructions, by adding onto the basic framework with wood. In doing so, he will create temporary sculptures which combine creative, informal practice with official and strict regulations, coexisting with one another.

Nevin Aladağ was born 1972 in Van, Turkey. She studied Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and moved to Berlin in 2002. Her works have drawn international attention, with solo and group shows at venues including: Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Kunsthalle Basel, Art Space Pythagorion, Samos , Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Sharjah Biennial 11, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, ARTER Vehbi Koc Foundation, Istanbul, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOT)in Tokyo, the XIV Biennale Internazionale di Scultura in Carrara, the Biennale Cuvée in Linz, Hayward Gallery London, 11th Istanbul Biennial and the 8th Taipei Biennial among others.
