The Blog "MyWar. Participation in an age of conflict"

A cooperation with the seminar "Gender, Kultur und Gesellschaft" by Dr. Katharina Hoffmann, Carl von Ossietzky University OldenburgOldenburg

This blog has been started accompanying the exhibition "MyWar. Participation in an age of conflict" (from 10. june – 29. august 2010 at Edith Russ Site, Oldenburg). The first articles have been posted by students of this seminar. Nevertheless, this blog is meant to be a public forum, so we would like to invite comments and more articles around issues on war / peace and gender (or other cultural categories and contexts).

Media (art) educational concept

The Edith Russ Site for Media Art has got a media (art) educational programme in which children, adolescents and adults can get to know artistic possibilities to work with analogue and digital media. At the same time the programme aims at founding a network of media artists and educators, teachers, institutions of higher learning and scientific and cultural institutions to develop collective concepts for an artistic and educational praxis with the new media. Realised primarily in connection with activities concerning the current exhibition and events at the Edith Russ Site for Media Art, they were also deployed in mobile approaches at schools and similar institutions. All projects were on principle initiated and carried out by the Edith Russ Site for Media Art.

Since May 2008 the Edith Russ Site for Media Art is able to further develop its educational branch thanks to a sponsorship given by the federal state of Lower Saxony. The project, which primarily tries to intensify the collaboration with schools, is directed by the artist and art mediator, Nanna Lüth.

Contents and practices

Core competence in media skills is regarded as the key qualification for getting ahead in tomorrow’s knowledge society. The various forms of new media are to be made accessible to young people so that they can better understand the strategies and codes of a media world that is entirely commercial in character. Investigating the new media through art is an essential element of the programme because creativity and ‘lateral thinking’ are the viable alternative strategies for solving media-related problems. All workshops offered, therefore, aim at learning in communicative project work and conveying conceptual knowledge that is both content-related and, as far as form is concerned, aesthetic.

Production / Presentation

The results of all projects realised in the Edith Russ Site for Media Art will be presented in temporal context with the exhibitions in form of a presentation at the last weekend of exhibition in the practice room of this institution. The participants of the workshops will take an active part in the presentation. A second possibility is to publish the originated medial productions and workshop via the internet. That way, the participants can continue their reception and reflection process on media, art and society in interaction with other visitors of the exhibition, artists and a wider public.
