At the Far and Farthest Point

Opening Reception: 2 April, 2004, 8 pm
Videos and Artist Talk: 7 May, 2004, 8 pm
International Museum Day: 16 May 2004, 10 am – 6 pm
Exhibition Dates: 2 April – 31 May, 2004

The installation At the Far and Farthest Point is an immersive sound environment, which simulates an experience of modern day psychosis. Upon entering a geometrically askewed interior with a variety of choreographed light and voices, the visitor is enveloped by a sense of spatial and acoustic disorientation. The installation becomes an improvised game, which hypnotically entangles the viewers in their own mental space.

Though she is most well-known for her videos, which have been widely viewed internationally, her recent work has expanded beyond using images and producing installations with only sound and voices.

For this piece, Oechsler deals with the current media society's creation of psychological phenomenons. The masses of both fictional and documentary information, which are aimed at a person's private sphere, can cause a loss of personal authenticity. The installation refers to this state, overwhelming one's thoughts and reflections and allowing almost no chance to intellectually engage with what is being experienced. Instead, a reflection on the content gradually occurs after exiting the work.

Videos and Artist Talk

Oechsler is known as a successful video artist. Her videos are subtly unnerving psycho-dramas, which provoke us to question the motives and meanings behind the materials presented. The videos will be repeated on May 16, International Museum Day.

Necking, 1997, 1'40”
In a school gymnasium a group of young women play a gamecalled »passing the apple«. The self-consciousness of the female participants overshadows the pleasure of physical interaction and signals sexual awareness.

Strip, 1997, 4'40”
A portrayal of girls aged eight to fourteen, strippingand reassembling handguns while blindfolded. The video was recorded at the only Home Office approved British gun club licensed to offermembership to children from the age of eight.

For The Very First Time, 1999, 4'43”
Three young women are absorbed in the activity of sniffing the scent of flowers. The atmosphere is enhanced by hyper-real sound while lavish colour heightens the sumptuous nature of the subject – until ecstasy.

Replay, 2001, 1'42”
A man and two women repeatedly run and jump toward each other. The power emanating from the fast and furious action presents a contest of physical and psychological strength.

In the Shadow of the Dog, 1999, 6'41”
A series of visual chapters based on newspaper reports about the shooting of several men in a Helsinki gun club. The attack was carried out by one of the club's female members.
